"Doing That Which is Right"

January 2016

Hello!

2016 is off to a flying start. I'm putting the t-shirts on sale again: https://store.ulc.net/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=tshirts. The shirts are on sale for $4.99. Limited stock, but a great price if we have your size. The Master of Chaplaincy Studies is on sale for $15 off! https://store.ulc.net/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=chaplaincy-studies

Read below about a special one-time offer for ministers!

UPCOMING MERGER! - I sent this message out last month, but I don't think it went through for everyone, so I'm sharing the info again. For well over a decade, Kevin Andrews (who runs ulc.net) and I have had a great working relationship. It has been progressing and is now at the point where we have decided to combine forces! There's so much craziness that has gone on in the ULC community since George (Br. Martin) took control of the monastery websites, then 'Br. Michael' started his own thing and mucked up the waters. Kevin and I decided it was time for some unity.

It will be happening over the next couple of months. You will notice that the stores will be merged into one. The courses will still be available, but now the HQ courses will count towards final graduation from the Seminary. The number of credits for each is still to be determined. More information about that will follow as things progress. All the mailings will continue, including the kind words, but from now on, they will be from both of us. Hopefully, the site will still get an overhaul.

On a side note, when I added those from Kevin's group to the newsletter and kind words mailings, the names didn't seem to transfer over correctly and either there is NO name listed or there is a full name. Please use the edit link to add your name properly in the 'fullname' line. If you fill out the full name and the first name, both will show on the kind words list. Please add your first name to the line that says 'fullname'. Yeah, I know it's not ideal, but I didn't set it up right when I started.

SPIRIT QUEST BOOK - As a one-time special offer for ministers, to celebrate this new merger, I'm offering the opportunity to order the Spirit Quest course as a book. Prior to this, only those who have taken the course for a degree were given the chance to get the entire course in a book format. I am now offering you,  the same chance. You won't get the degree for it, but you will get all the valuable information to have at your fingertips. This link will be good through the end of February (since the last mailing has some troubles, I'm extending the offer), so whether you have taken the course or not, this is the chance to get a copy of the book: http://www.lulu.com/shop/rev-amy-long/spirit-quest-a-metaphysical-journey/paperback/product-2440882.html

KIND WORDS: I've been sending out the weekly kind words for about 5 years now, I think. I have been rewarded ten thousand times over for sending them out. I get so many wonderful emails from you all and they make me smile. Throughout the time I've been sending them, I've been repeatedly urged to put them into a book. I was hesitent to do it because I like the idea of them being personalized and being sent one at a time, but I can't go against the flow forever and I recently caved to the demands. :) To that end, I am pleased to offer the Kind Words book. There are 184 kind words sayings in it. I sent out a note to the kind words list, as well as posting it on FB and I was overwhelmed by the quick response. This book is print on demand, so needs to be ordered directly from the printer. You can order it at: http://www.lulu.com/shop/amy-e-long/kind-words/paperback/product-22347963.html. It takes about a week and a half to get it, once you order it. When you get it, post a picture of yourself with it on our FB discussion page. That'll be fun.

If you aren't on my kind words mailing list, please go to http://www.ulcseminary.org/kindwords.php. They are free and they come weekly. A note about that too, please feel free to change the name and forward it to however many people you want. My goal in sharing them is to spread kindness and good vibes to as many places as possible. Put your own name at the bottom. I'm not looking for credit -- just the results. :)

LATEST LESSONS - My latest lessons seem to be related to parenting. Parenting is hard. It's especially hard when your teen really wants to move out, but we are all biding our time until college acceptance letters come in. I'm amazed at how stupid I have become in the last year or so. I'm suddenly ignorant and offensive and a bunch of words ending with 'ist'. It's a wonder I can get through my day. Mind you, nobody has ever said that about me before in my entire life, but being viewed through the lens of a teenager is eye-opening. There's an old joke that comes to mind about the parent who said that when his son turned 18, he viewed his father as ignorant in all things and was amazed, when he turned 22, how much his father had learned in such a short time. I miss the days when mom was great and all was well. I'm fairly confident that those days will return again, but transitions can be painful.

I've learned through my years that we all have a choice of learning through pain or wisdom. Learning through wisdom is the best choice, but is the least likely to happen. Learning through wisdom is when we know to look both ways before crossing the street because mom or dad says so. Learning through pain is deciding to look both ways because you got hit by a car when you didn't. If we all embraced learning through wisdom, we would all have very different life experiences. I wouldn't have gotten cancer because I would've just changed my diet, my mindset, and my spiritual outlook without a death threat. But I didn't because I'm human. Change is hard and even good change is stressful.

YOUTUBE CHANNEL - We have a great youtube channel that might interest you. https://www.youtube.com/user/ulcseminary. There are bunches of mini-sermons from me about a variety of topics.

FACEBOOK DISCUSSION PAGE - On another positive note, I finally figured out how to make an actual discussion page on FB. It's already gotten really active, so if you're a FB user, please go to https://www.facebook.com/groups/1537737443165426/?fref=nf and click 'join'. It's a closed group, so you'll see all the posts as soon as one of the admins or I accept you in. Kevin's FB group is open to all of you as well. I will be sending out that info in the next mailing.

Quick reminder: If an email has no subject, I usually delete it unopened. If you ever get an email FROM me (or that looks like it is) and has no subject, delete it. I don't send emails with no subject or that only contain a link. And I only send attachments if it's something you requested.

In eternal gratitude,

-- Rev. Amy (And Rev. Kevin)

UNIVERSAL LIFE CHURCH MAILINGS ARCHIVE

At the Universal Life Church Seminary, we make it a point to stay in communication with you as much as possible. The internet is great for that. It makes it possible for diverse groups of people from around the world stay in touch. This is especially useful for ministers of the ULC.

Currently, we have several ways to stay in touch. If you are a seminary student, you get a mailing every two weeks with either a sample of an existing course or special info that we only send to seminary students. This could be info on writing sermons, it could be a free mini-course or something else entirely. You may be on our newsletter list. If that's the case, you get a monthly newsletter, semi-monthly course offering samples and occasionally some announcements. This page is an archive of all of our announcements. The announcements contain more timely information than the newsletters and we send them to everyone at once. People have asked to see past ones, so I thought it would be a good idea to archive them for people to browse through.

Please remember that some of the things mentioned in the mailings are either done or may not necessarily be available at this time.

UNIVERSAL LIFE CHURCH MAILINGS - DECEMBER 2009 Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!

Hello!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS - Not a lot of big news this month, other than some outstanding sales and just general well-wishes on my part to you. Just so you know, I'm very grateful to be able to be part of the ULC and to head up its seminary. I love being able to share in your lives, even if only in a small way, and I rejoice in hearing all the great things you all are doing. Thank you for being there

KIND WORDS - The kind words campaign has been a huge hit! On a whim, I decided to add all of our seminary students to the list. I think it was a good decision. I've sent out several emails so far and have gotten some great responses. As with all acts of kindness, it's selfish on my part. I feel so darn good every time I send one out that I grin for days. I can feel the well wishes coming back my way. If you haven't signed up for it yet, please do. It costs nothing and asks for nothing. The one thing I have found that surprised me was that I've had 5 or 6 people unsubscribe. I guess I'm curious as to why. Why wouldn't you want to hear some kind words coming your way. I like to get them, even the ones I wrote myself and sent myself. lol. Please sign up at any time.

It's available at www.ulcseminary.org/kindwords.php.

SALE ITEMS - For the month of December, I've decided to go all out and put a lot of stuff on sale. This is a great opportunity to get some things that you've been wanting from the Seminary, but didn't have the money for. I know the times are tough for everyone, so I thought a deep discount would be a great Christmas/holiday present that you can give yourself. There are going to be a lot of things on sale, so go to the sale section to view them all. If you have considered taking a course, this is the time because these are some great discounts on both courses and products.

NEW NAVIGATION - If you haven't dropped by the site in the last couple of weeks, be sure to check our new navigation bar. I spent a lot of time on it getting all the pages on the site listed in a comprehensive way. One of the suggestions you ministers have said to me was that it would be good if I could create an easier navigation. The sidebars helped, but I think the new drop-down menus will clarify things. I think it'll make it a lot easier for people to find what's on the site. Let me know what you think. Perhaps you'll find areas on the site that you didn't know existed!

NEW COURSE - I mentioned this last month, but I thought I'd throw it out again. This is a unique course in that the first installment of 6 is free. Dr. Louis Hook has put it together and because of his reputation, we have agreed to offer it here for you in this unusual format. The course is called: The Foundations of Traditionalist Theology One. There are six installments and you can order them one at a time. The first free section is available at OMEGA DAWN.

The degree will be a Master of Traditionalism.

The rest of the course can be ordered at: http://www.ulcseminary.org/store/product_info.php?products_id=209

TWITTER/FACEBOOK/MYSPACE - Just a reminder that we are now on all of these social networking sites. I'm still getting the hang of it. For those that aren't on Twitter, but want up to the minute info (such as there is), the Twitter box is on the front page of the site and it updates automatically.

UNIVERSAL LIFE CHURCH MAILINGS - FEBRUARY 2010

Happy Valentine's Day!!

Hello!

FEBRUARY IS ALREADY HALF OVER! - I find it interesting every year that January always flies by before I even get a chance to get adjusted to the 'new year' status. This year is no different. I had some personal things that were resolved a few days before the end of January, so I got to start February with a relatively clean slate. .......................Then life happened. lol That's okay though, it's what keeps life interesting. (If I remember right, 'may you have an interesting life' is a Chinese curse.)

NEW COURSE - I'm working on putting some new courses together. I have one that has been submitted to me, a course on astral projection, that will be available in the very near future. Many of you will get a sample of it within a week or so, and some of you are not as far along on the newsletters/mailings and may not get it for awhile. It will be sent to the seminary students as well. The course will be the Master of Astral Projection.

CURRENT GROWTH - As with last month, I thought I'd share some of the things I've been working on. My focus of late has been about the question of agreements. We all have agreements with various people in our lives -- maybe it's an agreement to be married to someone, to be someone's parent or child, to help someone, teach someone, etc. Have you ever met someone and felt a particular need to help him/her? Not the general kind of 'let's make the world a better place' kind of feeling, but one more specific to that person? My question that I've been looking at is 'what triggers an agreement to kick in?' How is it you can know someone casually for a few months, then suddenly 'notice' them? Or feel the need to suddenly help them, ask for help, or be part of their lives in some way? What causes that? I have noticed it strongly a number of times in the last few years. Growing up, I've often had the ability to notice certain people as being people I want to be friends with, but I never thought about it much. In the last few years, however, I've had it happen several times in an uncomfortably obvious way. I know that when I was sick, I had to go get a bone marrow biopsy. At that point, the most painful thing I'd ever experienced in my life. My church had asked for volunteers to come and be with me (my family was not close by). Two people volunteered. One left after about 10 min. The other one stayed and held my hand and talked me through it. We ended up becoming friends. She said she didn't know what made her decide to come. She said she just knew she had to be there for me. I'd known her briefly as the former roommate of my new roommate (who turned out to be a nutbar). What triggered that need for her to be there? Anyone have any thoughts on the subject?

MAIL - For those of you who have placed orders in January, rest-assured that everything has been sent. We've been having a terrible time with the USPS over the last few months. We do mail everything within days (usually), but I think someone in the post office has been really enjoying a whole bunch of ULC materials because the packages seem to not be arriving. If you have been sent a tracking number, that means we have packaged your order, gotten postage, and brought it to the post office. We can't get the tracking number without having bought the postage, which is a good indication that your package is in the mail. :) If you haven't received your package, please write to orders@ulcseminary.org and Monica can look into it. Sorry for the delay. It has been very frustrating on our end as well.

ASTROLOGY - I don't know if you are interested in Astrology, but I've found a really cool site that gives very in-depth astrology readings. http://www.astrologyzone.com/forecasts/. I don't live my life by them, but I do think that the readings are fun and interesting. It's a free site, so if you want to see it, you might be surprised.

KIND WORDS - I'd like to thank all of you who have been giving me such great responses to the kind words campaign. I think it has become my favorite thing to do for the Seminary. I am finding how big a difference it makes for people to get a few words of encouragement. I'd like all of you to try it. At least one day a week, if not more, say at least one encouraging thing to someone who needs it. Say something uplifting, positive and true. Say it without expectation, but with the intention of spreading good in the world. Mean what you say. Notice the difference.

It's available at www.ulcseminary.org/kindwords.php.

COMPUTER CRASH - If you've written to me in the last week and a half and I haven't responded, I'd like to apologize. My computer crashed and I had to wipe the hard drive. I had been using Norton Ghost, which was supposed to 'easily' restore my computer. Apparently, Norton's idea of 'easy' and mine are different. My dad spent about 12 hours on it yesterday and got everything restored. I do love my dad! At any rate, I'll be working to get things caught up and answer the many emails waiting for my attention.

CANADA - I just got some great information from one of our ministers about getting approved in Canada. If what she says turns out to be the case, we can be approved in Ontario in the next 6-8 weeks. I need to make a couple of phone calls and fill out a form. If I need help (members to sign), I'll let you know. I'm excited about the prospects.

GROUP HEALTH INSURANCE - I don't know if this is something that would be possible to do for ULC ministers, but I'm going to look into what would be involved in getting a group rate health plan for ULC ministers. Is this something anyone else would be interested in? If so and/or if you know anything about setting it up, let me know.

SALE ITEMS - There are still a lot of items on sale right now. Wedding Workbooks by the case are currently on sale. Buying the books in bulk are a great way to save money on the books. Giving the books to your couples enhances your professional image and makes your job much easier, by allowing the couples to select and customize their own ceremonies.

I found that by giving the couples a book, people comment frequently that the ceremony seemed so 'them' and wondered if the couple wrote the ceremony themselves. Give it a shot. HERE

UNIVERSAL LIFE CHURCH MAILINGS - NOVEMBER 2009

KIND WORDS - As many of you know, there's a new function on the site called 'Kind Words'. So far, it has been a really big hit. People go through their lives on a daily basis without hearing anything nice. This is a great way to change that. Periodically, you'll get an email that tells you something warm, kind and uplifting about yourself. It's a free service and I hope you all sign up.

It's available at www.ulcseminary.org/kindwords.php.

MORE WEDDINGS, FUNERALS, AND RITES on Email - This is something that people have been asking me for ever since the book came out (and a few BEFORE the book came out.) This amazing book is available as an email -- sent to you in a Word document so you can manipulate the ceremonies and customize them for your own events. There are new ceremonies of a wide variety. If you are a minister serious about being prepared, this is a must-have item.

ONLINE RADIO PROGRAM - Recently, I was honored to be invited to be on the Mona Magick show. She interviewed me for an hour about the ULC Seminary. For those that missed it, you can download it and listen to it here: http://www.monamagick.com/events_ulc.htmlhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/MonaMagick/va/2009/10/02/the-universal-life-church Under information & organizations:

Previously Mentioned:

CHAPLAINCY PROGRAM - Go to www.ulcseminary.org/chaplaincyprogram.php to sign up. For those of you who have been taking courses through the seminary, those courses may also go towards your Chaplaincy program. Six courses are required and two are elective. Check it out and sign up. It's free to sign up and you'll get some mailings along the way. The program is going well. There may end up being one more requirement for the course, but it's one that everyone will want to take. It's a course on pastoral counseling.

CHAPLAINCY COURSE - On a related note, we have the new Chaplaincy Course available. It's called the Master of Chaplaincy Studies. It's a core required course for the Chaplaincy Program. http://www.ulcseminary.org/store/product_info.php?products_id=205

This program will teach you what it means to be a chaplain, the history and expectations.

MASTER OF THE HISTORICAL JESUS- I mentioned this last month, but I wanted to make it known again. We also have a new course called the 'Master of The Historical Jesus.' There's a sample link listed on the Seminary Program page.
