I will be conducting a Christian/Wiccian wedding in July. This will be my first wedding unless I have one before then. Anyway, I do not understand the hand fasting. The couple have a friend that will do that but I don't know anything about it or when they will have it done in the ceremony. Could someone give me some info on this.

Thanks.

I don't know. I don't know much about Wicca. Any help would be great.

Thanks.

Dear Rev. Rose,

Will this be a Wiccan handfasting, A Christian one, or a combination? I have some ideas that may be of assistance

Yours in the Way,
JP

You definitely ought to consult with the other person officiating, as it doesn't do to go evoking opposing symbolisms in the same ceremony.

Well, not usually, especially if a binding relationship is the aim of the ceremony.

Might I suggest http://www.handfasting.info as a resource? It is an informative site, and should answer some of your questions.

A handfasting is a ceremony that is like a Christian Marriage ceremony. Normally it's conducted by a Priest or Priestess (although the latter is normally the preference), and it is when two Wiccans pledge their love and devotion to each other. In every way you can think, it is no different than any other religious marriage ritual.

There are "types" of handfastings. Some are trial handfastings, done to ensure fertility. It's where you promise to be with this person for a year and a day until the woman is pregnant. Then the handfasting to legally bind them is performed. This is a very uncommon version now.

The Handfasting ritual that is on my site is at http://davensjournal.com/TTHfst.xhtml This is the one for the Seax-Wica tradition I follow. Other versions are below.

It should be noted that there is a holy ceremony for HandParting as well, or a religious divorce. Instead of joining the couple and ignoring the possibility of the marriage falling apart, there was a need for a ceremony to dissolve the joining in the eyes of the Gods, as well as the legal divorce. So the HandParting ceremony was created as well.

Just a little trivia.
